Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are gradually transforming road safety on the African continent. These technologies, long reserved for premium markets, are now becoming available on mid-range vehicles imported into Africa.
Automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control are now available on many models. These systems are particularly relevant to the challenges of driving in Africa: poor road conditions, heavy and unpredictable traffic, and night-time driving on poorly lit roads.
Manufacturers are adapting these technologies to local conditions. For example, pedestrian detection systems are calibrated to identify frequent movement along roads, while lane departure warning systems adjust to often faded road markings. Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai are gradually equipping their models for the African market with these features.
The impact on accident reduction could be considerable, given that Africa has the highest road mortality rate in the world. Raising driver awareness of the optimal use of these systems remains a major challenge, requiring appropriate training programmes.
